When Is The Teacher’s Day In China?
September 10.
In Chinese modern history, Teacher’s Day has been informally celebrated on different dates. It was not until the ninth meeting of the Sixth National People’s Congress Standing Committee passed the State Council’s proposal in 1985 to establish September 10 as the Teacher’s Day. As such, September 10, 1985 was the first official Teacher’s Day in China.
Why September 10 Is The Teachers Day In China?
There are two main reasons:
Chinese policy makers felt that the Teacher’s Day should be a festival with great cultural connotation, and it should continue the long-standing historical tradition.
September 10 is the birthday of Confucius. It was considered appropriate to designate the birthday of Confucius as the Chinese Teacher’s Day. According to research and calculation by authoritative departments, Confucius was born on September 28, 551 BC (Gregorian calendar).
This day is also the right time: first week of September marks the beginning of the new school year. However, by 10th September, the busy schedule in the first week of the new school year has been over, hence there is more time to organize Teacher’s Day in the second week. Therefore, the activities of showing respect to the teachers are carried out shortly after the freshmen have entered the school.
How Teacher’s Day Is Celebrated In China?
Since Teacher’s Day is not a traditional Chinese holiday, there is no uniform and fixed method of celebrating the Teacher’s Day in China. Every year, there will be different types of celebrations in different places. The government and schools would generally hold a Teacher’s Day celebration and commendation ceremony to award bonuses and certificates to teachers; organize school students, song and dance troupes, etc.
