Lesson 1: Chinese Reading Practice with Pinyin & English

Welcome to Lesson 1 (Level 5) of Ming Mandarin’s free online Mandarin Chinese lessons. In this lesson, let’s do some real Chinese reading practice. Since you are reading level 5 lessons, I expect you to know the basic Mandarin Chinese characters and words.

Well, on 28th Match 2020, due to Covid-19 pandemic, China temporarily banned most of the foreigners from entering the mainland. However, according to the official notification on 23rd September, China lifted ban on the entry of foreigners.

How about we go through the official notification?

For your convenience, I have divided the notification in 5 simple sections. For each of the sections, one or two English interpretations are provided. What’s more, I am also adding pinyin for the characters. With all these resources at hand, a level 5 Chinese reader should readily be able to read the following notification.

根据当前新冠肺炎疫情形势及防控需要,现对2020年3月26日外交部、国家移民管理局联合发布的《关于暂时停止持有效中国签证、居留许可外国人入境的公告》部分措施调整如下:

English Interpretation 1:

In view of the current COVID-19 situation and the need of epidemic prevention and control, adjustments are now made to the announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Immigration Administration on the Temporary Suspension of Entry by Foreign Nationals Holding Valid Chinese Visas or Residence Permits issued on 26 March 2020.

English Interpretation 2:

According to the current situation of the new crown pneumonia epidemic and the needs of prevention and control, some measures of the “Announcement on Temporary Suspension of Entry by Foreigners Holding Valid Chinese Visas and Residence Permits” jointly issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Immigration Administration on March 26, 2020 are adjusted as follows :

自2020年9月28日0时起,允许持有效中国工作类、私人事务类和团聚类居留许可的外国人入境,相关人员无需重新申办签证。如外国人持有的上述三类居留许可于2020年3月28日0时后过期,持有人在来华事由不变的情况下,可凭过期居留许可和有关材料向中国驻外使领馆申办相应签证入境。上述人员需严格遵守中方防疫管理规定。

English Interpretation 1:

Effective from 0 a.m., 28 September 2020, foreign nationals holding valid Chinese residence permits for work, personal matters and reunion are allowed to enter China with no need for applying for new visas. 
If the above three categories of residence permits held by foreign nationals expired after 0 a.m., 28 March 2020, the holders may apply for relevant visas by presenting the expired residence permits and relevant materials to the Chinese embassies or consulates on the condition that the purpose of the holders’visit to China remains unchanged. The above-mentioned personnel shall strictly abide by the Chinese regulations on epidemic prevention and control.

English Interpretation 2:

Starting at 0:00 on September 28, 2020, foreigners who hold valid Chinese residence permits for work, private affairs and (family) reunion are allowed to enter, and relevant personnel do not need to reapply for visas. If the above-mentioned three types of residence permits held by foreigners expire after 0:00 on March 28, 2020, the holders can apply to the Chinese diplomatic missions abroad with the expired residence permits and relevant materials provided that the reason for coming to China remains unchanged. The above-mentioned personnel must strictly abide by China’s anti-epidemic management regulations.

3月26日公告其他措施继续实施。中方将在确保防疫安全前提下,逐步有序恢复中外人员往来。

English Interpretation 1:

Other measures in the Announcement issued on March 26 will continue to be implemented. While ensuring effective epidemic control, the Chinese government will continue resuming people-to-people exchanges in a step-by-step and orderly manner.

English Interpretation 2:

other measures announced on March 26, will continue to be implemented. China will gradually and orderly resume personnel exchanges between China and foreign countries under the premise of ensuring the safety of epidemic prevention.
