What’s the most difficult challenge in learning Mandarin Chinese? In my opinion, the most difficult part of mastering Mandarin is to learn thousands of Chinese characters.
However, even if you know the characters, it’s important to learn connecting them to form new words, sentences, phrases, paragraphs, and so on! Although it’s difficult to estimate how many Chinese characters do exist (the natives use about 5000 characters in daily life), the number of words in the Chinese language is virtually infinite (metaphorically speaking).
